Texas Veterans Commission awards $475,000 grant to Charlie’s Place, Goodwill Industries of South Texas, and The Salvation Army

Corpus Christi, Texas – Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Fund for Veterans’ Assistance awarded $475,000 grant to fund human services programs specifically in drug and alcohol rehabilitation, job training and placement, and rapid re-housing to assist veterans and their families in the Coastal Bend.

“In 2015, there were over 28,000 veterans who resided in Nueces County and we’re seeing that younger veterans who were deployed for multiple tours in the Gulf War are having a difficult time integrating back into civilian life.  Now more than ever, we need to help our veterans, said Martin A. Longoria, U.S. Army Major (Retired), Nueces County Veterans Officer.

Three local non-profits, Charlie’s Place, Goodwill Industries of South Texas and The Salvation Army are working together to serve all veterans and their families in Coastal Bend including those with other than honorable discharge.

“At Charlie’s Place, we offer support by providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation.  Veterans served are able to access peer recovery coaches, helping them become successful with recovery, “said Amy Granberry, CEO at Charlie’s Place.

“We have 10 beds dedicated to Veterans which are at capacity most of time, “said Jesse Elizondo, director of social services at The Salvation Army.  In regards to financial assistance, The Salvation Army will provide financial assistance to prevent homelessness and rapidly re-house veterans out of homelessness and into their own home or apartment.  “

What’s remarkable about this collaboration is that we are able to serve all veterans including those who may have other than honorable discharge.  At Goodwill, our focus is to provide job training and employment placement for both veterans and their family,” said Tracy Ferezan, director of mission services at Goodwill.

The TVC funded veterans programs begin on July 1, 2016.
